Why Freeze Your Eggs?

Egg freezing is a proactive choice for those seeking to delay parenthood, pursue educational or career ambitions, or safeguard fertility in the face of medical treatments. By freezing eggs at their peak biological quality, patients maximize their chances of a healthy pregnancy in the future, creating flexibility and peace of mind. Common motivations include:

  • Planning ahead before age-related fertility decline becomes a concern.
  • Facing medical treatments that may impact fertility, like chemotherapy or radiation.
  • Delaying childbearing for personal or professional reasons.
  • Seeking fertility preservation for genetic or health-related peace of mind.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Egg freezing is most successful for women in their 20s and early to mid-30s, when both egg number (ovarian reserve) and quality are at their highest. Freezing eggs during these years provides the greatest chance of healthy embryos and live births in the future, even if parenthood is delayed.

Typical candidates for egg freezing include:

  • Women aged 20 to 37: Best outcomes are seen in this age range, with significantly higher chances of live birth per frozen egg than for those who freeze eggs later. However, I still recommend women before the age of 40-41 freeze their eggs knowing they may need more eggs to freeze to have a meaningful success rate.
  • Individuals facing medical treatments: Egg freezing is recommended before chemotherapy, radiation, or surgeries that could harm ovarian function, in order to preserve reproductive potential.
  • People with family histories of early menopause or diminished ovarian reserve: Freezing at a younger age safeguards fertility before egg quality declines.
  • LGBTQ+ individuals and those planning for future family building: Freezing eggs early supports diverse parenting paths and life circumstances.
  • Anyone seeking reproductive flexibility: Career-focused individuals, people waiting for the right partner, and those wanting to delay parenthood can all benefit most if they freeze eggs by the mid-30s.

Success rates for egg freezing decrease after age 36 due to lower egg numbers and quality, and the procedure is rarely recommended for women over 40 except in unique circumstances. Dr. Foyouzi will conduct thorough ovarian reserve testing and health evaluation to ensure egg freezing is both appropriate and truly beneficial based on your individual biology and goals.

The Egg Freezing Journey

Initial Consultation and Evaluation

Your path begins with a detailed review of your medical history and fertility goals. Ovarian reserve testing (bloodwork, ultrasound) helps create a customized plan suited to your unique circumstances.

Ovarian Stimulation

For approximately 10–14 days, hormone medications gently encourage your ovaries to mature multiple eggs. The process is closely monitored for safety and optimal results.

Egg Retrieval

Mature eggs are collected in a short, minimally invasive outpatient procedure using light sedation. Most patients can return to normal activities the next day.

Vitrification (Cryopreservation)

The retrieved eggs are flash-frozen with advanced vitrification technology, preventing ice crystals and maintaining egg integrity for years to come.

Storage and Secure Future Use

Frozen eggs are monitored in our state-of-the-art cryopreservation facility. They can be thawed and fertilized via IVF when ready to pursue pregnancy, or stored indefinitely for true flexibility.

Success Rates of Egg Freezing

Egg freezing success rates vary significantly by age, with younger patients typically achieving stronger outcomes. For example, women around age 30 or 35 who freeze about 20 eggs may have around a 90 percent chance of at least one successful birth, while that probability decreases to roughly 75 percent at age 37 and around 51 percent at age 40. By age 42, the likelihood drops closer to 37 percent. Because fertility and egg quality naturally decline over time, freezing eggs at a younger age can help preserve the best possible chances for future pregnancy.
